INTRODUCTION TO PHONETIC AND PHONOLOGY (Exercise 1)

  • What is mean by Phonetic ?Phonetic is study about sounds system of language
  • How can the sounds of language can be produced ? The sounds of language can be produced by movement of air in our organs of speech
  • How many types are the study of sounds of language ? explain it !
There are three types of the study of sounds of language:
 a.    Acoustic Phonetics
The study of the physical properties of sounds
b.    Auditory Phonetics
The study of the way listeners perceive sounds.
c.    Articulatory Phonetics
The study of how the vocal tracts produce the sounds.

  • What is IPA ? International Phonetics Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the latin alphabet.
  • What it’s function to Phonetics ? The function of IPA to Phonetics can be used to represent all sounds of all human languages.
  • Explain these terms !
a.    Pulmonic sounds
Pulmonic sounds is sounds produced by using air from the lungs.
b.    Egressive
Egressive is sounds produced if the air is pushed out.
c.    Ingressive
Ingressive is sounds produced if the air is sucked in.
  • How is the sounds produced ? explain the steps !
Our brain commands the lungs to breath for providing an air supply (we breath with our respiratory organ), then the air through the larynx where a set of muscles called the vocal folds are located (a sound source that sets the air in motion in ways specifically relevant to speech production), then the air through the organs above the larynx (the pharynx, the oral cavity, the nasal cavity) modified in various ways depend on kind of sounds that we want to produce
